What a huge success it was at The Wakefield Pontefract & District Federation of Concert secretaries Command show on wednesday night. it was very pleasing to see a full house on a wednesday night. Standing room only at one point. Thanks to Sheldon Bonner, Ellie Gent, Trevor Craig. James Brandon, Care free and Two Steps Forward. A Big thanks too sound engineer Steve Storm who made the sound great. From a personal point of view it was great to meet friends old and new and I finally got to meet in person the legendary Danny Harris and Shuan Whitaker. ROCK AND ROLL EXTRAVAGANZA CARLTON SOCIAL CLUB (WAKEFIELD) LTD

The Rock and Roll Extravaganza starred Billy Dean and Dean Holloway. For those who don’t know Dean is Billy’s son. It was a busy night; the club was full to near capacity.

Dean Holloway opened the first part of the show singing many notable 50’s and 60’s rock and roll hits. Dean sang songs by Eddie Cochrane, Chuck Berry, Matchbox and Elvis to mention a few.

After the break Billy Dean took to the stage and showed his versatility by singing songs from artistes of the same era, such as Teenager in Love Bad Boy Three Steps to Heaven and many more. Unknown to the audience he said I am doing my act in 2 parts. He sang first of all for 30 minutes and then had a short break.

After the break Billy Dean returned to the stage and sang some more songs and then started to introduce a variety of guest singers. This is what was said by Billy and Dean

“Thanks for the guest singers too, Tony O'Sullivan, Dean Holland, Cliff Fowler and not forgetting Andy Wood and Kat, Lisa Matthews and Chris Connor for making the journey over and for Chris's mind blowing performance, seeing really is believing!”

One member of the club said it was the best night he had ever in the club.

Seems like the Next Big event this Year...The Royal wedding...is likely to taken up by Clubs in Leeds, many of whom will make it a community event.

Paul Kew’s Charity Show Report

It was a fantastic night at Carlton Social Club's Help for Heroes Show on Tuesday 24 August 2010. It was well supported. About 110 attended. We raised £795 on the night. John Gillan was on form with his comedy and his vocal talent had the audience spellbound. John Mycroft was his usual self....Quality singing songs of the sixties era. He did some great Cliff Richard numbers, so I suggested he set up a Cliff Richard Tribute. Watch this space as they say; it might happen at Carlton Social Club in the none too distant future. Dean Holloway has improved tremendously and he had them rocking on the dance floor with his set of rock n roll music from the late fifties. It was nice to see fellow artistes Tony Lee, Johnny Dee, Hayley J and of course John's wife Karen supporting the night. On behalf of Carlton Social Club Thank you to the artistes, everyone who attended and Glenn Pinder at Magic 828 who helped in publicising the show.

On Tuesday September 21st 2010 Carlton Social Club near Rothwell are hosting the Wakefield & District Concert Secretaries Federation Showcase. This is the first time that this Club has hosted this event, and there is plenty of talented Artistes on Show for the Bookers to view.
The Event is Compered by Hayley J , with appearances by Artistes Emma Dale, Natalie Wilson, Karen Mycroft, Adam Jay and Keith Davison.

In the April issue of the Northern Club Review [Price 30p from Leeds CIU clubs] Terry Coffey, the President of the Leeds CIU Entertainments Committee has written an article warning Clubs and Club Artistes about the present financial position of Clubs and the impact on Entertainment generally in Clubs.
Terry makes some controversial comments in his article, some of which may not go down very well with Entertainment Agents and Artistes alike.

Looking ahead to March 2010 there are two excellent events taking place at Leeds Social Clubs.
First of all on 2nd March 2010 Complete Madness are appearing at Swillington Miners Welfare Club. Just £3 on the door will get you admission to see one of the foremost Madness Tribute Acts in the UK.
Later in March on Saturday 20th March Leeds Band
Good Thinking Batman are putting on a special show at Ackroyd Street WMC, even better there is no admission charge so you really have no excuse not to go along and support this Clubs efforts to provide a Top Class Show.

Paul at Carlton WMC has been in touch to say that the Elvis Tribute night on 29th January 2010 featuring Paul Somers is now a Sell Out. Well done Carlton.
However if you want to see another excellent Elvis Tribute on the 29th January 2010 then get yourself down to Dewsbury Road Social Club on Dewsbury Road, Leeds. Here you can see Darren Rivers as Elvis. Its a Charity night, so you'll also be helping a worthy local charity. A plus here is that there is No admission charge.

Mercury Gig at Beeston Hill Postponed till March

We have been told by Norman at Beeston Hill Social Club, that the Gig scheduled for Friday 22nd January 2010 which would have featured Queen Tribute Act Mercury, has had to be postponed due to circumstances beyond the Clubs Control. A new as yet unconfirmed date of Friday 26th March 2010 has been scheduled. A further posting will be made when this date is confirmed. It is noticed that a few Clubs are putting on Special Shows this month some of which have an admission price to pay. A selection of these are below.

Rothwell WMC

On Sunday 3rd January, appearing at Rothwell WMC are four peice band One Way, no admission charge to see this excellent Act

Swillington Miners Welfare Club

Really pushing the boat out in January are Swillington Miners Welfare Club which is investing heavily in bringing the very best of Elvis Tribute Acts to the Club on Saturday 9th January 2010.

Appearing is Rob Kingsley with his "A Vision of Elvis" Show, complete with backing Band and Backing singers, This Act is superb but comes with a price tag of admission tickets at £10 each.

Well worth the fee for an act normally seen in the theatre format. For a video and more infortion see the Swillington Club's webpage.

Beeston Hill Social Club

Moving on to Friday 22nd January 2010, we have another Ace Tribute Band at Beeston Hill Social Club. This time its "Mercury" a Tribute to that timeless band Queen. Tickets are £5 for this event, very affordable but check with the club for availability. See the club webpage for a video and more information about other excellent Acts this Month

Anglers Club Leeds

Last but not least of this months reviews is Anglers Club, Leeds. This club has gone for Award winning Act Beardsmith, who have been around the Club Circuit for many years, firstly as Boomerang, but now sporting the name of Beardsmith. This act is a family band consisting of Father and a number of his children, some now grown up are indeed very talented.

Admision for this event is by Ticket priced at £5 available from the Club. To see a video of this Act and for more information about this busy Club visit the webpage.

Xmas and New Year Entertainment

Its Nice to see that after all the problems clubs have financially at the moment, that most have now settled on which entertainers they are to see over the Festive period.

There are some really good acts booked into Leeds Clubs, and members will have plenty of choice to see many varied and talented acts on display.

Here are some Highlights.

Bramley WMC

Christmas Eve has Hull based female Duo Venus on view, this excellent duo have been around the club circuit for a few years now and are an extremely competant Act

Morley United Services Club

Saturday 26th December sees the ever popular Leeds Band Good Thinking Batman fronted by Carrie McCann at this venue. Good Thinking Batman have recently had a change of lead singer, but this has not detracted from there enormous appeal. If you are one of those who floats between venues then Morley United Services Club will be well worth a visit.

Beeston Hill Social Club

Christmas Eve sees the appearance of that excellent Male/Female Duo Crazy Diamond at this club. Crazy Diamond are relatively local hailing from the Pontefract area, and again are an extremely experienced and competant duo. Well worth a look.

Bramley Band Club

This club is known for putting on excellent entertainment, so its a bit of a surprise to see them sticking to solo acts for xmas week, although they have a good duo booked for new years eve in Rock Steady.

Crossgates WMC

This Club is definately pushing the boat out this xmas , and whilst many clubs are being cautious about the size of the acts they are putting on, not so at Crossgates. They have plumped for Foxy a Trio on Xmas Eve, and Rock Band BadFingers on New Years Eve.

So All in all its fair to say that that most clubs have been relatively conservative in terms of the amount they are prepared to spend on holiday entertainment, which is perhaps a sign of the financial difficulties that some clubs are having. It also send a message to acts and agents who have attempted to hike prices up for this period.
